My Students

Third graders will make a big leap this year. The goal? To inspire and pique curiosity of learners who become informed, responsible citizens and environmental leaders.

Our school is very diverse, truly representative of the ethnic mix that is Los Angeles.

While the majority of our students are African American and Latino, several of our students are white and from other ethnic and cultural backgrounds, with fifteen languages represented. Our school is a Title 1, high poverty school in Southern California with over 60% of students eligible for free or reduced lunch. Our wonderful children are enthusiastic, energetic, creative and passionate for learning. We have great parental support, yet need assistance in order to obtain materials to enrich student learning.

My Project

My students will read articles in Scholastic News and Science Spin magazines that will keep them informed of current events and scientific discoveries to help them better understand their world. The magazines provide meaningful nonfiction content that motivates students to read, discuss, and comprehend. They will also be using the magazines to write summaries and present current events to peers. The teacher needs the printer ink to continue printing student certificates and other learning materials.

This project will provide meaningful, grade appropriate, current reading material to inspire young students to read and become aware of issues facing the world and its people.

It will assist students in identifying main ideas and details as they learn to write summaries about interesting articles to show what they learn. Who knows? Perhaps today's inspired learners are tomorrow's environmental leaders.
