Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My first grade students are amazing, energetic, fun, and lovely children who have a drive to learn. They are like sponges absorbing all the information they can receive from me or anyone who presents to them. Most of my children are Spanish speaking with English as a second language. Many of the parents are only Spanish speaking.
The students come to school daily ready to learn with their friends.
They are excited to be surrounded in a safe, comfortable cozy learning environment. I see them walk into our classroom full of life, ready to learn and excited for what is in store for them that day. I feel honored to have the responsibility to teach these amazing first graders and prepare them for the next grade.
My Project
My first graders are often unable to understand current events and interpret the world around them. They have no material for Social Studies. The science curriculum is limited for their needs. This makes it difficult to connect them with significant world events outside their neighborhood. The Scholastic News magazines I am requesting will create an understanding of citizenship skills in every issue. The children can stay up-to-date on significant current events with each classroom issue.
They can focus on the curriculum connected to weekly events for elementary students.
Each Scholastic News magazine will present high interest stories and late breaking news. A variety of engaging formats will encourage kids to understand and interpret the world around them. Understanding social studies, people, cultures, holidays, U.S. symbols, history, maps concepts and topics will be fun and easy to understand with each reader. The children will be connecting current events each week. The children will discuss the magazine with whole group first. They will regroup in smaller groups to discuss the articles. The class will take home the magazine at the end of the week to share with their family.
