My students come from a teeny-tiny school in an even smaller community. We're the only high school in a parish of 10,000 people, and there aren't many opportunities for them to go out and see the world, except through literature.
I want to help them foster a love for reading.
Too often they ask for a book off of my shelf, and because I am so limited, they leave empty-handed. My fear is they won't be able to see the world outside of this small town. I have been able to provide books that match my students's personalities, and it's so amazing to hear a student say, "This character is just like me!"
I also want my few that say they don't like to read to finally find that book that changes their mind. They need to see the outside world. Some may never leave this small town, but they can travel through time and space in a book.
My Project
I don't think I've had a class that loves to read more than the classes that I have now. They crave new, interesting books. There have been many days they have asked if we can just read AR for the entire class.
They want to read!
So many of my students have perused my shelves and read a good majority of the books I have currently. My goal with this project is to give them more variety of books from which to choose. I have selected romance, books written in verse, sports, and young adult book that my kids can relate to. Our titles include LeBron James, On The Come Up, The Rule of One and more.
