Weaving Dreams into a Reality

Help me give my students the opportunites to use more sophisticated looms with heddles. These looms will allow my students to have real life experience with the weaving techniques we are studying.

My Project

We are currently delving into our weaving unit in Art class, where students are engrossed in creating small weavings on simple cardboard knotch looms. While I was able to acquire one Cricket Loom using our art funds, it has come to my attention that having only one loom for over 25 students to utilize is less than ideal.

In this unit, we are exploring various weaving looms, styles, and techniques from different corners of the globe.

Our focus is on weaving traditions from the countries our students hail from and beyond.

One of the remarkable aspects of our school, Iowa, is the diversity among our students. With individuals from all over the world, including many newcomers, our school currently represents families from 22 different countries globally. To enrich our unit further, we have been studying weavers from diverse regions such as The Navajo Nation, Ghana, Mexico, Guatemala, the Philippines, Afghanistan, and more.

Considering the wide array of cultural backgrounds within our student community, I believe that having additional weaving looms would greatly enhance their learning experience and appreciation for the art of weaving.
