This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are most engaged when they have hands-on materials and activities that help them design in new ways. In art, we integrate core subjects to expand our learning while making connections with the real world. We create to make art that is beautiful and investigates problems while showing meaning.

Weaving is a creative way to explore real mathematical ideas visually.

Simple weaving techniques can help students experience basic concepts in geometry and number theory while encouraging the development of representation and modeling techniques– fundamental mathematical skills. My students come from different backgrounds, so creating a project that helps make math more visual can reach students across multiple languages and cultures.

This weaving frame, yarn, and other materials will help students grow in math concepts while creating art to display around the school. It will allow them to see the history of weaving, the artists who use these methods today, and how they apply to other disciplines. Students will see their work displayed around the school and feel proud of building something that helped with their art and math ideas.
