Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I have taught primary grade children for the past twenty-nine years, in the inner city of one of Chicago's most challenging neighborhoods, on the south side. This year, I am the STEM/Health teacher for grades pre-k through fifth.

The students at my school are hard workers and are eager to learn; they are so happy being back in the classroom full time after a year and a half of remote learning.

I also teach an after-school program to first and second grade girls called "Sistas of STEM" and an after-school program "Number Ninjas" for primary grade students. Both programs were developed by me.

My Project

Right now we are back at school for in person learning. The students are excited to be back in our school building after our Winter vacation.

Unfortunately, right now the Omicron variant of the Corona Virus is running rampant in our school buildings in Chicago.

Several of the classrooms in my building have had to quarantine because of exposure to the virus. My youngest learners are in desperate need of K95 masks to limit the spread of the virus in school. The students of Chicago who attend Chicago Public Schools, have been promised one K95 mask and that will be adult sized. My youngest learners need a mask that will fit their face properly. The regular size masks, which a lot of them have been wearing, are ill fitted and fall down all day long. Also the K95 masks offer much more protection than the cloth and surgical masks. If students have more than one mask that will give parents the opportunity to disinfect a used mask and allow their child to wear a different one the next day, etc.
