This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are part of an elective class in 3D Design. During our 2 months together we have learned to sew, create our own clothes, code, laser-cut and 3D print. In class they are able to work enthusiastically in groups or independently on their own, demonstrating to be a cohesive and engaged group. They are exceptionally talented and have wonderful ideas for their projects: I feel however that at times they are limited in scope by the materials and equipment in class.

They have amazed me day after day with their creativity, inventiveness, and energetic presence in the classroom everyday.

They are playful and exuberant and are a joy to be around.

Students in the school are primarily Latinx from the Oakland area. I would like to expand the amount of tools and equipment in class, so that each student has the opportunity to engage with hands-on skills like sewing, soldering, coding, woodworking. I am asking for extra machines in order to serve more students, and make the time in class more efficient.

My Project

My students are completing a project which involves learning basics of pattern making to create a "wearable-tech backpack", that has integrated lights on it. The students integrated learned skills around circuitry, soldering, coding, and sewing, to create a backpack that has lights that react to external stimuli.

The projects could be done way more efficiently if the students were able to work on more machines at a time.

At the moment their work is limited in scope by the equipment in class, and we constantly have to halt work because of missing or faulty parts. A complete set of sewing machines, hand routers and soldering irons would help us greatly.
