Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at an elementary school in Camden, NJ. We have students here from K-2nd. I teach 1st graders and I have 24 students in my class, as well as a different reading class that has 24 students.
My students are the children who light up when they get an answer correct.
I have several who ask all day: "When do we get to do math?" or "Can I sit in the library to read?" They love learning and they want to know MORE. The sad part about that is that they are already behind their peers because of where they live. We are in a city that was named one of the most dangerous places in America at one point. These students may or may not have people reading to them at home. They may or may not have attended a childcare facility that taught them numbers or letters before Kindergarten.
The more I can do for my kids, the more of a chance they have to be on grade level by the end of the year. My mission is to make them the best that they can be (academically, they're already the best kids in the world!)
My Project
These materials will help our class because they will be able to visually see examples when we are doing math! The 10-frames that they can have at their desks will be the same as the magnetic one I am asking for on the board. It will make lessons quicker because we won't spend so much time drawing the circles and the frames, and we will get through so much more math! They are going to LOVE having their own mini frames!
The reading games and books will be great for our reading class that is in the morning.
Our students love to read! They love games! The books will be great to build the skills of students who read a little higher than others, and the sight word games will make learning fun for the students who need to grow a little with reading!
The carpet is going to be the best for them! We are going to put it in the library for them to sit on and read, but they are going to be thinking math subconsciously because of the 10-frame! We will also be able to pull it to the front of the room during math to do "HUMAN 10-FRAME GAMES!"
