I teach academically and intellectually gifted students in a rural Title 1 school. These students score in the top 10 percentile on standardized tests when compared to their peers. They display the need for a differentiated curriculum that will challenge them to think creatively and critically.
I believe using novels to analyze fiction is the best approach to teaching reading.
Therefore, I need a copy of each novel for every student in my room. I have 31 ELA student that could benefit from novel studies.
The resources I chose, a class set of Stella by Starlight, will enhance the students' critical thinking skills by analyzing topics such as author's purpose, main idea, theme, and many other literacy topics as we read.
It will also expose them to a different time (1932) in their home state of North Carolina.
Many deep topics are addressed in this novel. Not the least of which is racism and the Ku Klux Klan.
Students need to read about this time in America's past. It is important that they understand the history of the nation and what we have been through.
