My students are fourth and fifth graders. They are in the Academically Gifted program and understand how our actions affect the world around us. Because of this understanding, we have established a the recycle program. The students are completely in charge of all the collection duties. It is my job to supervise and coach, only. Each team has a leader and they work together to help to make our school a little more ecologically friendly. Our school is economically disadvantaged and many of these students do not have curb-side recycling at their homes. Doing this at school has made them much more aware of exactly how much waste we add to our landfills each and every day. I have seen a wonderful change in their attitudes, cooperation and responsibility since establishing this program. The truly understand that you can make a difference, one person at a time.
