My Students

My students are awesome! Despite high poverty and low income being a common way of life for the majority of my students, they come to school ready to learn. I want to provide them with not only a stable environment, but one filled with positive and rewarding experiences. My school is a Title 1 school where 75% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch.

My students come from different backgrounds and life situations with school being a place where they can feel safe and be themselves.

My students love to be active and in motion around the classroom. They love to participate in group activities. They are intelligent, hard-working, creative learners. They are eager to grow and learn. They want to show me just how far they can go.

My Project

My students love being outside. Our playground is a small space, covered in blacktop, surrounded by four concrete walls. There is very little room for them to run around and play. On top of this, there isn't always playground equipment available. Most days they come back to class with tons of energy and complaining that there isn't anything to do.

Being active keeps the blood flowing and the mind pumping.

I gave my students the challenge of coming up with solutions to their recess dilemma. The students came up with a variety of ideas ranging from running up and down the halls to using Go Noodle. After listening to all of the ideas, the best one was walking to a nearby park and having 30 minutes of active fitness time. They felt this would help them use up some energy and get them closer to their 60 minutes of active fitness time a day.

My students then talked about equipment. They created a wish list of equipment they would like to have to take with to the park. This included soccer balls, basketballs and footballs. As they had recently been introduced to ultimate frisbee, they decided they needed frisbees also. Flag football is a game the students also enjoy playing and they also wanted that to be available to them. Finally, pedometers were talked about as a way to count their steps to and from the park each time we go.

This equipment will engage my students in being healthy and fit and show them the importance of being active!
