My Students
I have 30 awesome students who vary tremendously in their abilities and interests. I try to present the fifth grade core content in a way that gets them excited to learn while allowing them to be confident and successful. My students love learning when they are able to have hands-on experiences to discover the reasons behind phenomena they see in the world around them.
My students are enthusiastic to learn despite the many challenges they face.
The school I teach at is located in a low income area. My school was 1% away from being qualified as a Title I, so we do not receive extra funding and resources for being low income. With a lack of funding, it is extremely difficult to provide the exciting and challenging opportunities that my students need to improve.
My Project
I often have a hard time hearing some of my students so I'm sure they also have a hard time hearing each other. I am frequently asking my students to talk louder. I had a student teacher whose observer suggested passing around the classroom microphone that is made to hang around the teacher's neck. Passing the microphone from one end of the classroom to the other seems totally impracticable to do during a discussion. Recently my students started D.A.R.E and the officer throws around a stuffed animal so only the person holding it can speak. The students love being able to throw the stuffed animal, but it doesn't help the problem of not being able to hear quiet students.
The Qball will help everyone to be heard while also helping the students to be engaged.
It is hard for students to continue to listen during a discussion when they can't hear the person speaking so this will solve that problem. Getting to throw and catch a ball will also encourage students to be heavily involved in the discussion. Participating in class discussions teaches my students many important communication skills that will help them prepare for their futures.
