Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are energetic, smart, and thoughtful fifth graders who are eager to learn new things every day. My class consists of students with mixed abilities, students with IEPs, and ENL students. I work in a Title I school in one of the poorest districts in New York. Many students live in shelters, take care of siblings, and have very little home support. In my class, 100% of students receive free lunch. For many of them, school is the safest place for them to be.
Despite all of the challenges my students face, they are eager and excited to come to school and learn every day.
My Project
It's so important to provide students with access to new and highly engaging books. My students have book clubs where they meet to read and discuss books. I start the book club by providing them with a reading strategy and any background knowledge they might need for the text. I am asking for new multicultural and diverse books for my students.
My students come from very diverse and underrepresented backgrounds.
My hope is that with these books they will be able to see themselves and build their confidence in themselves. When students read about people who look like them and grew up in similar environments like them it makes them feel that they have a future and they are capable of so much.
