My 5th grade students have a great deal of natural curiosity but not a lot of experience or previous exposure to much of the content that is covered in my class. When covering various locations around the country or events that have happened in the country’s past, we have a limited number and range of books that have information and pictures/photos about the subject material.
Having more content books at various reading levels, ones that include topics covered in my class would help establish and deepen the understanding of these topics for my students.
Knowing that students prefer fiction or non-fiction over the other, I am striving to find books that will get all levels and types of readers more interested in the class content.
By having more reading material that supplements the content learned in my class, students will be able to access more information presented in both fiction and non-fiction genres. Many of these books provide visuals of the learning material which will benefit the students due to their limited background knowledge and previous exposure, if any, to the material.
Additionally, I have a wide range of reading abilities, so receiving more books will allow students across many reading abilities to access the information.
My students also create a variety of learning styles, and some of these will support the variance in those styles.
