My students are readers; however, they did not start out that way. I teach sophomores, juniors, and seniors. When I was able to implement the idea of choice reading, my students became true readers of books instead of fake reading their way through the required novels. For 20 minutes each day, my students get to take a breath, take a break, and read a book. Many of them had never finished a book, let alone books of their choosing. Books they were truly able to get lost in and enjoy for the sake of reading.
There are no assignments, no expectations, no paper, and no study guides; they just read.
But many of them are not able to find the time to read on their own. Many of my students tell me they haven't read a book of their own choosing ever. I decided that if I wanted my students to be readers, I needed to provide contemporary and diverse books to read and the time to do so.
My Project
The use of choice reading does so many things for students. First, it allows them time to decompress and fall back in love with the concept of reading a book purely for pleasure. I want to curate a classroom library where every one of my students feels represented by, and interested in, the novels. By donating to this project you will provide my students with the continued opportunity to find books that mirror their individual interests, social and economic backgrounds, and current struggles. When students see themselves in literature, it brings such value to the classroom, and they feel valued as well.
