Book lovers Alexis, Sarai, Yuliana, and Jose, are the founding members of our teen book club. These are great kids who are here to dispel the myth that teenagers don't like to read!
We are a Title I public middle school, and most of our students qualify for free lunch. Over half of our kids live in housing projects down the street. Many do not have books in their homes, or even a dictionary. Immersion into reading has not been a part of their lives, and yet reading opens up both the mind and heart. We are fighting ever-shortening attention spans, and reading helps settle yet stimulate the brain. Reading for pleasure improves vocabulary and writing skills that will last a lifetime. Join me in supporting our young people. Thank you kindly!
I am thrilled with the idea of my own students creating a school-wide reading club, and gives these students a chance to build leadership skills in arranging the founding of this club. This calls for teamwork and real-life problem solving. They will create flyers, and make announcements regarding the club. They are also really excited to be able to choose the actual book titles!
In Their Own Words
With these books, students will become more interested in reading. Books are my escape into a new world because my life is complicated. This is why we need your donation to give us books, so we can learn about the lives of other teens, which will give us different views on our lives. With this project we can increase our vocabulary by reading books we actually love and make friends while we do it!
I will make the most of the leadership opportunity involved in creating this project by helping recruit our friends and other students around the school. When kids read, they grow their brains. We can also bond while sharing the books we read. We can decide which books we would recommend to each other.
What we will do is read, read, read! We plan to gather in our teacher's room during lunch once a week. Our library has been closed for years so we don't get to check out books. Meeting together at lunch will give us a chance to read together, and discuss the books we read and see if we recommend the books to each other.
