My Students

My students are hardworking 6th, 7th, and 8th grade band students. We are in a small town in Connecticut. I have close to 250 students who walk through the room each week. We have three separate bands by grade, and three separate percussion ensembles specific to each grade. In addition, we have a jazz band that meets twice a week after school for an hour at a time.

Music is a universal language.

They are dedicated to their concerts and work endlessly, even when I sound like a crazy person! My students work out of the "Tradition of Excellence" books, and in addition, they learn all 12 major scales by the end of eighth grade. Students also perform in two concerts a year, as well as the "Music in the Parks" competition at Six Flags in May.

My Project

Over the past 4 years, our program has increased from 75 students to over 215 students! That being said, we need more equipment! We currently do not have enough music stands and chairs to meet my students' needs. The last concert, I had to ask my students to bring in their folding stands so we had enough for the concert. It is so heartwarming to see the growth, but my students should not be punished by simply not having the equipment. Music, in general, is expensive! Every department needs money, and if I can alleviate any cost for my students, then I am doing my job. Thank you for your generous donations!
