My incredible students are students that need extensive transition opportunities in order to make their high school experience relevant for life outside of high school.
Not all students fit into the typical model that high schools offer, and all students deserve an education that meets their needs.
In order to do this, we have created a Community Based Instruction class where the students take trips out into their community to practice, in a meaningful way, the skills they will need to be independent members of their community after high school.
My Project
Our Community Based Instruction class has been busy this winter. We were fortunate enough to have a guest business owner from our community come in one day a week to teach us how to sew. Who knew it would be so much fun! The students absolutely loved the projects they worked on. They made pillows, pillowcases, and mug rugs.
At each stage, I was fortunate enough to see them grow in understanding, be gracious to our guest, and beam with joy at the completion of each project.
Their focus was intense. Their excitement was contagious.
Our community guest only has so much time to give, and while she is already planning out the projects for next year, we would love to continue working on the skills she has taught us in-between now and then.
Since we do not have sewing machines or supplies available, she was bringing in these items every week for our class to use, and then, of course, packing them up. We would love to have the necessary tools available so that we are able to make the most of the time she has with us. This will also enable her to give us sewing homework so the students can work on and perfect their newly learned skills.
Sewing is a skill that I feel is overlooked. The focus needed, the fine motor skills practiced, the planning, the patterns...the opportunities to learn are endless. With a little initiative and a few supplies, there is no limit to what can be accomplished.
