We recently started a Community Based Instruction (CBI) course to meet the needs of the students in our school where the typical courses offered were simply not providing relevant instruction for them. In this course, we strive to provide many outings into their community to practice using the daily life skills and soft skills we practice in the classroom. The students thrive during these trips. We have opened a class account at the bank, visited and shopped at some of our local grocery stores, restaurants, participated in community events, and, of course, visits to recreational sites are always fun. The cost of these outings add up. We made products and set up booths at local craft sales during the holiday season to help with funding, but now that those are done, we need a more sustainable, steady way to raise funds that would be meaningful to the students. We have decided to do an in-house coffee cart. Students have designed menus that will be given to staff at the beginning of each week. Students will be taking orders and figuring out how much of each item is needed. They will then prepare the coffee, hot chocolate, tea, and treats, set up the cart, and deliver to the staff on Fridays. An enormous amount of quality skills will be practiced daily in order for this endeavor to be successful. The students are actively a part of brainstorming, designing, and advertising in order to make this opportunity happen. All the money made from sales will help us to be a self-sustaining program. In today's funding for schools, it is imperative that we are able to find a way to make programs like this self-sustaining. What better way than providing much needed and appreciated coffee to school staff on Fridays!
