Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Last year I had a visiting artist bring a potter's wheel to my classes and demonstrate with students. They were mesmerized, and since then they have been begging for a wheel. I told them that I did not have money in my budget for a wheel, but I would write a grant to help provide one.

I teach in an urban public school with an amazingly, diverse student body.

We have a significant number of refugee and low income students, with a poverty rate hovering around 90%. This donation will impact a broad cross-section of the student body. Students in my five classes and art club will be the major participants. These students include special education and ELL (English Language Learner) students.

My Project

In a recent after school art club meeting, my students discussed how they could use the wheel for service learning projects. Their ideas included a hunger awareness project involving hand-made bowls sold to benefit a local food pantry, and selling ceramics to benefit a list of selected non-profit organizations. There are many other benefits that a potter's wheel would bring to my classroom. Working on the wheel requires patience and persistence. Having a potter's wheel would promote these important qualities. The development of techniques, skills, and personal expression are additional benefits. Furthermore, a connection to an art form that spans centuries and continents is important in the modern and diverse world in which we live.

Our district is struggling to raise test scores and at times the arts can be overlooked.

Art is such a powerful force to engage and enrich student experiences. Please consider a donation towards the purchase of a potter's wheel to help make a difference in my students' lives. Your contribution will provide valuable hands-on experiences, develop skills and self-expression, and help enrich the lives of our students.
