Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My World History students do not yet realize how lucky they are to get a free, public education. I want them to see "He Named me Malala" to show them just how lucky they are. In Pakistan, girls are forbidden to go to school. By seeing this film, my students will learn that education is a privilege!

My school has almost 1000 students in a high poverty, Title 1, inner city middle school, where every student receives free breakfast and a free lunch.

The surrounding neighborhood is gang infested and often violent, yet my students still come to school every day with a thirst for knowledge. With the new Common Core State Standards technology is integrated into all areas of learning. As the school AVID Coordinator, and a history teacher, I like to expose students to new experiences even if it is not available in the school setting. Seeing the film "He named Me Malala" will be an experience they may not have been able to enjoy in their daily lives. I am very excited to introduce them to Malala Yousafzai!

My Project

Just watching the movie "He Named Me Malala" will show my students how fortunate they are to be given their education on a silver platter. After seeing the movie, we will be reading "I am Malala" which is Malala's story in her own words. My students live in a tough neighborhood, so they know what it is like to be shot at by gang members. But, my students have no idea what it might be like to be shot just for trying to go to school. I am very excited for them to see this movie and learn Malala's story.

This movie will demonstrate to my students how difficult for some kids in our world to get an education.

This story will absolutely instill in my students a deep gratitude for education. Malala's story will make them appreciate their school and teachers in a whole new way. I have read Malala's book, "I am Malala," and I can't wait to share this story with them!
