I am a third grade reading teacher of six classes, approximately 145 eager-to-learn students. In spite of the fact that we are a Title I school, with a poverty level of 86%, our culturally diverse population holds education in high regard. As a result, our children, despite language and cultural challenges, show academic growth and excellence each year.
I adore reading and, in particular, writing. Each summer in the anticipation of getting our students really motivated and excited about writing, I stock up on pencils for the children. I want to get started on Day 1. Therefore, all summer, I look for specials and I go from store to store, ensuring that there is no shortage of pencils. Before the summer is finished my house looks like a pencil factory. However, pencils aren't the problem.
I like for students to come in daily to a fresh supply of sharpened pencils. It is inspiring and motivating to our young writers, to allow them to be ready to spring into action as they generate ideas. Yes... I do tell the children they need to come in with sharpened pencils everyday. I even bought each child a pencil sharpener (also, purchased on sale, over the summer). None-the-less, sharpened pencils continue to be a problem, one that, hopefully you might help me to easily remedy. If I had a reliable and sturdy electric sharpener, it would solve our problem. I buy sharpener after sharpener and they do not last. It is absolutely MADDENING, not to have a pencil with a point available.
We did have an incredible and reliable sharpener this year, but, alas, with all the busy writers at work, our sharpener expired at the end of the school year. You would be doing an incredibly wonderful thing by replacing our now defunct sharpener. Please, on behalf of our future writers of tomorrow, I beg you to help us keep on writing. Thank you!
