Help me give my students 2 S.P.I.R.E. Illustrated Decodable Reading sets, a small bookcase, 2 UPlayToys Reading Cubes, 2 sets of Foam RekenRods Ten Frame Boards, dry erase dots, and fidget bands for student chairs.
First grade is a busy place where students are learning just about as fast as they grow. Every year a little no a LOT OF MAGIC happens when students are able to read proficiently by the end of the year.
I want to enrich my students experiences and interactions with reading books in my classroom.
My students attend school in a low socioeconomic area of the Wasatch Front in Utah. We have a diverse population of students including students who are learning English as a second language. This year 75% my students started first grade reading below grade level. Many students have struggles in and out of school that impact their learning in the classroom. COVID has added another layer of stress to my students this year. This is information about my class, not who they are.
My first graders are eager to learn and love to show what they know. Simply put, they are the BEST and I love teaching them!
My Project
We will be on our way to reading with the S.P.I.R.E decodable reader sets. These books will provide support for targeted areas where students struggle in reading. The table dry erase dots and reading cubes will provide further opportunities for students to make and write words.
My class will love having a bookcase to display books about topics we are learning about in the classroom.
The bookcase will anchor our reading corner where students can choose a book and enjoy reading!
Reading take effort and stamina. To help students build that stamina I will use the fidget bands to help students squirm and wiggle while they read and giggle! What are they giggling at? At themselves because the really are READING!
Last but not least the ten frame boards will be used in math to help students figure out what they read in story problems.
Being highly engaged in class helps students feel safe and secure at school. This is especially true in light of all the uncertainties and worries about COVID that exist outside our school walls. Becoming a proficient reader engages children and helps them cope with those stresses. Dr Seuss said, You can find magic where ever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need is a book"
