My Students
Do you tap your foot, twist your hair, or do something to help you concentrate? Well, many students have so much energy that it's difficult for them to focus or concentrate in class. They like to move it because fidgeting helps them focus.
In my regular education second grade classroom I have several such students who move to help them focus.
At age seven and eight their sensory systems are still developing. Some have processing disorders, attention deficit and sensory problems. They move around frequently, fidget with their classroom supplies, rock in their chairs and distract their classmates. Movement is a release of energy for them that helps them concentrate and pay attention.
My Project
The ball chair has been successful with regular education students as well as students who have special needs. It allows students to channel their energy in a positive way by moving to balance on the ball. Research has shown that this movement allows students relief from the need to fidget so they are able to focus on their work, making them more productive.
The ball chairs will be beneficial to all of the students in my class.
They will all benefit from a quieter more productive environment. Most importantly, I will no longer have to make unreasonable requests on students who NEED to move it.
