This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach 6th, 7th and 8th grade orchestra and piano classes. This year, I am blessed to have 60 orchestra students and 115 students will come through my door eager to learn how to play piano. This is the first year, in 3 years, that piano is being offered to all 3 grade levels.
Each student should be given every opportunity to achieve at his/her optimum level.
This means that my students should have access to higher quality material to match their eagerness to learn and to guarantee that there are no barriers to making sure they are successful in my classroom. My students come from various economic backgrounds and my school and district are unable to fund projects that are beyond basic needs.
My Project
Having new Fingerpower books in the piano lab will be tremendously helpful. Right now, students have to wait on others to complete their practice time on assigned exercises in order to share the books with their classmates.
Students often feel the pressure of learning exercises in a shortened amount of time due to not having enough books for everyone.
The books we currently have right now are falling apart and are missing pages so when exercises are assigned, and teaching is occurring, not all students are able to participate in the learning at once without sitting at a piano with another student.
