My Students

Students at our small, rural school have many challenges stacked against them. As a Title I school, many families live below the national poverty level. Students live in trailers and campers, some without the benefit of running water. They depend on food stamps, free school lunches, and weekend food backpacks. In spite of this, our students are reading more than ever. Library circulation is up and classroom libraries are flourishing.

I believe, deeply, that student choice drives a love of reading and my students depend on library books as many families simply don't have the means to buy books for their kids.

We are working had to appeal to all readers, even the "not yet readers" by offering books teens are interested in - newly published books YA books they WANT to read.

This project will allow me to stock my shelves with some of the most recently published and highly rated titles in YA literature. I know I won't be able to keep these books on the shelves!

My Project

My project is really simple: I'd like to get new literature on shelves and into student hands! I have been working to build relationships with our school's English and Reading teachers, and I am happy to report that nearly every English class in the school starts class with ten minutes of silent reading!

This grant will give me the opportunity to purchase some of the newest, most highly rated young adult literature for our high school library and support the daily reading that our students are now engaged in.

To select the literature requested, I pour over Booklist and School Library Journal reviews, as well as attended a recent Bureau of Educational Research seminar about "What's new in Young Adult Literature?" I have intentionally selected a wide variety of genres to fill with this project, including realistic fiction, fantasy, sci-fi, non-fiction, romance, graphic novels and novels-in-verse. Please help me stock my library shelves for the all the students in this small, northwestern Montana town. Thanks!
