Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are all extraordinary kids! Most of these students reside in a poor, urban area that is grossly underfunded, and, in some areas, lacking even the most basic of needs. Although many of them come from tough neighborhoods and lifestyles, they are strong, smart, and full of life. These are the scientists of tomorrow.

Each of these individuals has a mind for science and a contribution to make to the scientific world.

Their ingenuity is exceptional, and their thirst for learning is unquenchable. I learn more from them than they do from me! These kids are the kinds of kids that inspire innovation. They are the example that leaders should be following and the hope that will fuel the future.

My Project

Students in my classes participate in a program called Eco-School wherein they identify areas where our school lacks in sustainable practice. This year, my students have identified our school as part of what is known as a food desert - in other words, access to fresh and affordable produce is limited for people in these areas. To combat this sustainability issue, my students are creating different gardening initiatives at the school. One such is our classroom hydroponics garden. The hydroponics garden in my classroom helps my environmental science and chemistry students explore real-world applications of their learning. Another area of sustainable focus my students identified is a lack of biodiversity and green space at our school. They have created biodiversity promoting spaces with bird feeders and plants to promote an increase in biodiversity around our school.

These materials are a means by which to create a safer and healthier learning environment for my kids.

We are requesting different Aerogarden seed pods that will allow students to grow fresh produce year round that we can use in our hydroponics garden. We are also requesting bird seed and feeders to ensure our biodiversity promoting green space is well-equipped year round.
