Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
106 years is the age of the building my students come to every day. Located on the westside of Chicago, our school serves pre-K- 8th grade. Our demographic is predominantly Latino many learn English as a second language. The entire school qualifies for free breakfast and lunch. Often, students eat more at school than at home. They are motivated and love, love, love to learn. Unfortunately, staff turn over is high and resources minimal. We integrate literacy, writing and science. What better way to get busy in science then to READ.... I love being able to show my students pictures of science in action. Some of my students do not have access to the public library so I want to build one in my classroom. (Although I have collected quite a few used books....nothing beats that new book smell). Chicago Public Schools are historically underfunded. In order to be successful in the future, My students have to learn to research, analyze and compile information. A classroom library would be huge. My job as an educator is to prepare these students for high school and beyond. Please help me bring NEW BOOKS to my kids.
My Project
My school is on the westside in Chicago, IL. Many of students learn Spanish first as a first language. I am asking for NGSS aligned Science books written in both English and Spanish. I teach 6th ans 7th grade....so it is all about planets, the solar system, rock cycles amd food chains. We need some science books written in Spanish. Having access to these books will help many of my students gain understanding. They will also make my classroom a more comfortable place to learn. My kids love to learn and great books make everything awesome. Food chains and Planets and Rocks....Oh My... Let's Make It Happen.
