Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Last school year, 2018-2019, our staff identified 3,335 homeless students. This is 37% of our district! All of our students automatically qualify for free or reduced-price lunch due to the economic status of our community. Many of our parents are employed as field workers, where paychecks can be small or sporadic, especially in winter when there is not as much work. More than half of my class speaks English as their second language, and some have special needs. With that being said, they all love to come to school and want to learn. They deserve all the resources we can give to help them to be successful in school.
My Project
Many students at my school have social and emotional needs. We are starting a school-wide social and emotional curriculum next school year, but I am getting started on it this school year with students on my caseload.
These books are recommended to read to the students in order to help them understand social and emotional skills in real-life situations.
Reading stories to students helps them understand the skills presented in a different way. These books coincide with the lessons being taught in the curriculum as well.
Students will be able to go back and read these books to help them understand social situations. Students in the future will also be able to benefit from having access to these social books.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
