Our students love their home town and realize that graduation from high school is usually "graduation" from town as well. Economic hardship and cultural divisions are hurdles of this community. We are the only high school in our small school district. Our county is one of the poorest in the United States and employment is difficult. The town has about 3,000 people with a variety of religious affiliations and distinct cultural backgrounds.
Collaborative education is the key to making the future of these students brighter!
While their scholastic achievement and career readiness are crucial, learning to value the personal beliefs and social settings of each other is critical. We are situated adjacent to the Navajo, Hopi, Zuni and near the Apache nations. Our student population includes European American, Native American, Latin American and African American students. This diversity among our small 250 student population can be a strength for preparing our students for the global economy of which they will need to be a part. As our students learn to appreciate each other as individuals and as members of diverse vibrant cultures, they will learn to work in harmony with each other succeed in creating a positive global society.
By updating our maps and globes, my students will be able to better connect cultural and historical information with current events and gain more time for academic and creative tasks related to their research and presentation.
How frustrating is checking information for correctness finding out that your resources do not show current information?Up-to-date materials, such as maps and globes, allows students to be more engaged in collaborative research for our group projects about the people, language, and cultures of our world.
My students would like for me to correct the outdated information provided by our current globes and maps! I know they will be truly grateful for this simple update.
