This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Frustration is watching your students use 20 year old encyclopedias to do research or using old technology to try and access the Internet for enrichment activities in the content areas. My students need more modern learning materials to succeed.

Meyler Street Elementary School serves students who are predominantly from low income families.

Most students qualify for free or reduced lunch. However, the school also has a Spanish/English dual language program and my students are a part of that program. They are bright, energetic, and motivated. Meyler Street Elementary is also an International Baccalaureate candidate school. A major focus of IB is inquiry based learning.

My Project

The students currently are using outdated encyclopedias for most of their research. These reference books are about 20 years old. They also are able to use the computer lab every other week for research opportunities and content area enrichment. However, this is not enough. If the laptops and tablet are funded, my students can work in groups to do research on topics related to their inquiry units. Furthermore, they can use the laptops and tablet for enrichment in science, math, reading, and all other content areas when time permits.

When students are presented with technology that compliments there natural disposition for inquiry, the learning experience of those students are enhanced.

Now with a click of a mouse instead of turning the pages of an ancient encyclopedia, students will be more motivated in their research.
