My Students
Located in the nation's capital, the school where I teach serves the needs of a diverse community of students and families. My work is complex as I navigate how to build relationships and community across lines of difference like race, class, language, and country of origin.
As a language arts teacher, working with primarily English learners, my most important task as a teacher rests on my ability to fully articulate the power, complexity, and impact of language.
To communicate is to learn to advocate for oneself and one's community, and that reality is the cornerstone for what I do.
My students learn the importance of vulnerability as they develop their capacity to communicate through reading, writing, listening, and speaking. No experience is more humbling or profound than when a student potential a student has fully realized through their dedication to themselves and their pursuit of knowledge and self-expression.
My Project
The 2020-2021 school year has revealed incredible challenges for schools, especially with providing materials to students for virtual instruction. During the COVID-19 pandemic, my school has left no stone unturned when securing technology for our students to use during virtual instruction. We have distributed district-provided tech, raised money for donations, and even lent our personal devices to families. Unfortunately, despite all of these efforts, we still have families that do not have a laptop at home for their child.
Currently, one of my students cannot access their online classes, and we are desperately trying to fulfill this need.
I am requesting an HP Stream 14-inch laptop. This laptop is designed to work with all of the apps and websites we use for class and will allow the student to participate in live instruction with their teachers. The student will use this laptop during the entirety of distance learning and can continue to use the device if we transition to a hybrid model or return in-person.
Without this device, there is no way for the student to participate in instruction. We want to make sure that every child has a high-quality learning experience, and the only way to do that is to ensure that they have access to adequate technology.
