Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a third-grade teacher at P.S. 345, a shortage school in East New York, Brooklyn. The majority of the students test at below grade level. This can create a problem with their self-esteem and their ability to succeed at many things. Despite this our students are motivated and willing to learn everyday.
For the past three years as a third grade teacher, I have seen that the students' low reading abilities begin primarily from their lack of experience with vocabulary and phonics. Because our reading program allocates only 15 minutes of the day to word study, our students have very limited exposure to vocabulary, word families, word clusters, and phonetic sounds. I believe that my students will greatly benefit with supplemental word study and vocabulary activities that can help them overcome those weaknesses.
I am asking for funding for different independent vocabulary and word study activities from Lakeshore. The activities will enable the students to read and independently, and work with different strategies that can help them with word development and word recognition. The activity cards will provide hands on experiences by allowing the students to practice with word families, spelling patterns, and vocabulary development. I hope you can help us.
