Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a second year teacher working in an inner city school in Los Angeles. Our classroom has a handful of friends who are still honing their English skills. This means they can't access our different curriculums fully!
Although we have various newcomers joining our school, our school does not have a newcomer program for our little ones in grades K-2.
This is a HUGE problem!
We need dress up clothing for our various knowledge units in order to use drama to develop their English language. We study the human body, astronomy, ancient civilizations, history of the earth, and habitats! Teaching language through drama will give newcomers an opportunity to practice speaking English in a fun way with their peers. My students will serve as models so our newcomers can connect language with gestures. They will use their body to promote total physical response (TPR), which is an effective English language teaching strategy. While working in our costumes, students will be provided with sentence frames to help facilitate their learning. That's why we need our markers to keep creating sentence frames and anchor charts. Visuals that are appealing bring more life to our learning! The play-doh will allow us to make models of the different layers of the earth! We will use the different colors for each layer. Students will be able to share their learning while using their cool model they each made! My teacher assistant will use the games and workbooks to work in a small group with our newcomers to give them that special learning time to learn tier-1 vocabulary!
This project will target the mission of "Speaking Out" with the Allstate Foundation and will support fun ways for my first grade team to help their newcomer peers learn English and build their confidence with the language.
