My Students

What are the steps to closing the achievement gap when students do not have the necessary materials to succeed? As a teacher in a low-income, high poverty school district, I work with students who are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom.

Our state currently has the highest COVD-I9 cases/deaths and recently went through Hurricane Ida.

This pandemic has allowed the school to close temporarily or maybe permanently. Some homes are currently without light and food.

Snacks and food will help my scholars get through the aftermath of Hurricane Ida and the ongoing effects of COVID-19.

My Project

Having the basic schools supplies throughout the school year is what keeps the classroom running smoothly. Without the necessity supplies scholars aren’t able to function to their fullest potential. With pencils, paper, and erasers scholars are able to complete assignments given. The kleenex, wipes, and hand sanitizer helps during those cold winter months to keep germs downs. The color pencils and crayons will help with those art projects. These supplies will allow scholars to master assignments, test, assessments, and quizzes. The materials will make a tremendous difference in my classroom and in my scholars learning daily for the remainder of the school year. I as an educator see the struggle and hear students complain about how they are hungry, their stomachs hurt, or they are dizzy, all due to lack of eating. While they are provided a school lunch, many students opt out of cafeteria food. And so they go all day with no food or unhealthy candies.

I hope to stock my room with snacks that will not get in the way of learning while consuming, but that will also provide students with the proper nutrients for a healthy body and mind.

I often buy snacks out of pocket, but this year has proven to be financially difficult for me. I don't want to let my students down. They expect me to be the nurturer, providing them with snacks throughout the years.
