Help me give my students very large foam core sheets to make display bulletins to hang around our school to promote inspirational art and school identity.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is a small high school, an alternative school in a large urban public school system. Students here are ones who have been placed in our building after having difficulties or lack of success in the six very large traditional high schools we have. They come to my much smaller art class with much untapped creativity and abundant energy, and perhaps with a few difficult behavioral issues. Over three-quarters of them come from low-income households.
I teach a multicultural mix of students with heritages typical of those found within large metropolitan cities.
We are blessed to have smaller class sizes and my art lessons are tailored to each individual student, not to a rigid curriculum. I believe this way of teaching greatly impacts their success.
My Project
My art classes make inspirational signs with encouraging messages to have an uplifting visual impact at my school. We've done a large portrait of President Obama, delivering a challenging message, large college logos where our students are now attending, and other signs for our school programs. We often make clever holiday related art, or artwork promoting school programs. Many design, layout and artistic skills can be learned and developed through this kind of sign - making for our school. It definately sets our school apart. We do not have this in our school budget and formerly I, as the art teacher, have purchased these types of surfaces for my students to savor working on with my own income. We could really use your help purchasing Foam Core boards for us to pursue even more challenging artworks!
