Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

We have 600 students enrolled at our school and 100% qualify for the free lunch program. I serve a community of the working poor. This means that many of our parents work more than one job, but are still on some form of public assistance. We need five new desks! We unexpectedly received eight new students in one day! I don't have enough desks for everyone.

The desks my new students are using are ones that I pieced together from parts in the trash.

My Project

Being able to do assignments on a sturdy, reliable desk at school is a basic necessity. Students should not have to worry about whether too much erasing will wobble the desk until the legs come loose. Students should not worry that pushing away from the desk to line up may fold the desk's legs and send it crashing to the floor!

Students should not be concerned with whether the broken leg adjustment will cause the desk to crash down on their legs unexpectedly while they are working.

The tops of desks should not pop off while a student is rummaging inside to find a book.

All of these scenarios have happened in my classroom with the desks that I have had to paint and piece together. With new desks, my students can instead focus on completing their assigned tasks.
