My Students

Imagine walking up to your elementary school and passing abandoned trailors, stray animals, and grafitti. Growing up in a neighborhood that looks like this can make a child believe that change is not possible.

My students are a special group of kids who love to read.

Seeing them walking down the hallway with noses buried in books after a visit to the school library excites me (and sometimes frightens me when they won't close the book as they walk up the stairs)! I want the book boxes in my classroom library to be filled to the brims with interesting books that kids can't wait to get their hands on. My students are growing up with the challenge of living in an impoverished community, but I work hard to provide everything they need for success. I always ask my children if they learned something new today. When our project is filled and the children are able to open up the boxes full of beautiful, brand-new books, they will have so many more opportunities to say, "Yes, Mrs. S., I learned that I can make a difference by..."

My Project

When my team started planning our Earth Day activities, we decided that we wanted to have the students each have their own caterpillar leading up to a butterfly release. Since April is Poetry Month, we were inspired to have the students study poetry about the environment and hang their own poems on a "Poet-Tree!" Third grade has so many wonderful activities planned, but the missing pieces are the books. We need books to study new things, read information about the Earth, and most of all, inspire us to think of ways to help make a difference on our planet. This is why I've requested books such as The Lorax, The Life Cycle of a Butterfly, How to Help the Earth, The Magic School Bus and the Climate Challenge, and 100 Great Poems for Boys.

My students need to know that together they are big enough to make a difference!

These books will show them when they walk to school in the morning with smiles on their faces and books in their backpacks that they can make this world a better place, one small step at a time!
