My Students

My inquisitive third-grade students have taken on the "Reading Without Walls" challenge in which they will each read books about characters who are different from them, topics they wouldn't normally explore, and formats they wouldn't usually check out on their own.

These avid, curious readers desire to explore the world beyond their own experiences, deepening their understanding of humanity through rich, meaningful texts.

They continually inspire me through their questions and discussions about social issues and their desire to learn about how they can be agents of change in the world beyond their everyday scope.

My Project

My goal is to build a culturally rich and diverse classroom library that will include single copies of a variety of books as well as book sets for students to share their thinking and learn from one another during reading groups.

To use the phrase coined by Rudine Sims Bishop, I wish to provide these young readers with access to books that act as mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors to help them make meaning of the world by opening their minds and hearts.

In order to do so, I need to provide culturally responsive book sets for reading groups and student-led book clubs to supplement my diverse yet limited classroom library.
