My goal is to build a culturally rich and diverse classroom library that will include single copies of a variety of books as well as book sets for students to share their thinking and learn from one another during reading groups. To use the phrase coined by Rudine Sims Bishop, I wish to provide these young readers with access to books that act as mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors to help them make meaning of the world by opening their minds and hearts. In order to do so, I need to provide culturally responsive book sets for reading groups and student-led book clubs to supplement my diverse yet limited classroom library.
