Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students at my school are creative, passionate and curious. My school serves a diverse population. We strive to maintain a racial, ethnic, and economic mix because we believe that diversity and equal access benefit everyone. Our students tend to care a lot about social justice and making the world a welcoming place for everyone. They are passionate about topics such as sustainability, politics, school integration, and feminism, to name a few! Each year they dig deep into two big integrated units of study that combine social studies, science, reading, and writing.
My Project
Every week my fourth graders meet with their first grade reading buddies to share books and conversation. By introducing the younger students to new books and happy reading experiences, the fourth graders are taking on a big responsibility, and they need the right books for the job. The beautiful, critically-acclaimed books in this project will form our classroom's new Book Buddy Library. Picture books are great for all ages, and this library will give students a purpose for dipping back into picture books even as they spend most of their independent reading time savoring chapter books.
My students spend time each week browsing this section of our classroom library and selecting books to read to their younger buddies.
These books will give the big and little reading buddies windows into other peoples' experiences as well as mirrors of their own. I am picturing this project as a sort of Reading Rainbow Redux, with fourth graders guiding the younger readers through interesting stories and new information about the world around them.
