We Need Diverse Books: New Books for a New School Year
My students need 11 new books by diverse authors to kick off our independent reading program for the year.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My ELL tenth grade students are all recent immigrants who are learning English as their second, third or even fourth language. My students are from more than 20 countries and speak more than 6 different languages.
My students are amazing recent immigrants who work part-time jobs, take care of family members, play sports and attend our after-school programs.
As we launch independent reading in 10th grade, students are reading about the world around them and for their own interests and passions.
My Project
In 1990, Dr. Rudine Bishop wrote, “When children cannot find themselves reflected in the books they read, or when the images they see are distorted, negative, or laughable, they learn a powerful lesson about how they are devalued in the society of which they are a part.” Thanks to the We Need Diverse Books campaign, the YA industry is publishing more and more talented authors of color, and my students need access to these books.
Unfortunately, at my school, there is no set budget for the purchase of books for independent reading, and we do not have a school library.
Your donation of this 12 book collection will put the latest and greatest YA books in my students' hands.
This collection of books includes the NYT #1 bestselling Black Lives Matter-inspired fantasy book Children of Blood and Bone, a diverse romance short story anthology, and several novels with diverse LGBT characters.
