Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My ELL tenth grade students are all recent immigrants who are learning English as their second, third or fourth language.
My students are amazing recent immigrants who work part-time, take care of family members, play sports and attend our after-school programs.
In total, my students speak more than 7 different languages, including Portuguese, Spanish, French, Somali and Haitian Creole.
In my ESL classroom, I teach reading through literacy interventions with a Wilson Language push-in teacher, independent reading and whole class texts. One of the biggest challenges is finding books that are engaging and age appropriate for my teen students who are still learning to read in English.
My Project
These 22 books will be an important addition to our classroom library. My immigrant students are learning a new language in a new country, but they are still teenagers. This collection of books ranges from teen-appropriate graphic novels to simplified texts on cars and driving.
My students are motivated and growing readers, but they need more books that relate to their lives as adolescents making sense of their world and relationships.
Every month, students will take quizzes or complete projects to assess their understanding of the books and their growth as readers. It is essential that I can offer books that are at their "just-right" reading level but are also age appropriate.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
