My Students

My students are the spirit of the school. My students are newly arrived immigrants from all over the world. Spanish, Creole, Vietnamese, Chinese and Portuguese are some of the languages that are spoken by our amazing students. Although faced with a myriad of challenges in their lives, such as trauma, homelessness, having to work to pay rent, adjusting to a new language and culture, and other responsibilities that are emotionally demanding, they find a way to persist.

Through their perseverance and eagerness to learn when they walk in my class every day, my 9th graders represent hope for immigrants in America.

My students are inquisitive, optimistic and ready to engage and contribute to their new communities. The American dream is what drives them every day when they walk into school.

My Project

My students focus on a year long essential question- What Does it Mean to Participate in Your Community. They will embark in a biography project that highlights women leaders, they will learn about influential leaders in education, these leaders also represent a range of backgrounds and cultures.

It is critical for my newly arrived immigrant students to see themselves in books and to see how women have contributed to science, arts and education around the world.

Now, more than ever, we need to celebrate diversity and women !

Providing inspirational books for students will increase the level of engagement and thus make independent reading and class discussions relevant and rich for all students. It is essential that students feel that they too, can give back to the community that is giving so much to them now. We live in a diverse world and books should showcase the beauty of the diverse world that we live in.
