Many of my students do not have money for basic supplies, but that doesn't stop them from trying to learn everything they can. Usually, I have them bring a box of Kleenex to school as part of their school supplies but they can't afford it this year.
Although many of my students are deemed at-risk, they my wonderful second graders are trying very hard to learn English at the same time they are learning how to read but they struggle because they don't have support at home.
I teach second grade at an older, urban school where many of my students are the children of deployed military personnel.
All of my students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch, but we are not a Title I school and as a result, we lack the resources and opportunities of many other schools.
My Project
My second graders are currently learning at home. They have no access to the public library, only limited access to the school library and our classroom library is closed to them.
My students are missing out because they currently have no access to the wonderful world of children's books.
I am asking for copies of 34 books including some Dr. Seuss favorites, multicultural books, as well as nonfiction books about Jackie Robinson, Ruby Bridges and more. I plan to read these books to my class via ZOOM meetings, let each child choose a favorite one and then deliver it to them.
