We Need Book Boxes!

My students need sturdy plastic book boxes for the books they choose for Reader's Workshop each day. Their cardboard boxes have completely fallen apart!

My Students

Ms. A., are you going to work with me today?" is a question I hear daily during our Reader's Workshop time. Because of our classroom library, I have been able to have one on one reading conference time with each of my students while the rest of the class is engaged in reading "just-right" books.

My students live in a high-poverty neighborhood where 100% receive free or reduced price lunch.

My school has the highest population of English Language Learners in our district. They are highly motivated and eager to learn but many of them lack the resources for a literacy-rich life. They do not live in a neighborhood where a library is within walking distance and our school library has been in jeopardy of being closed for the past few years. My students love being immersed in stories and a wide variety of non-fiction. When the world of rich literature and expository text is opened to them, their excitement permeates the classroom.

My Project

My students have been placing their individual "just-right" books in cardboard book boxes. Because they are reading books from their boxes for at least an hour each day and changing their books each week during their "book shopping" time, their book boxes have completely fallen apart! I need my books to last for several years in order to continue to be able to provide Reader's Workshop for my students. With sturdy plastic book boxes, my books will last much longer.

My students are 3 months into their experience with Reader's Workshop and they have already developed a high level of independence, autonomy, and love of reading.

I want to honor this by providing them with high quality storage for the books they have chosen for themselves to learn from and enjoy and explore.
