My students are inquisitive, bright, eager to learn and excited to discover more about the world through books. We are a diverse class with students from many different backgrounds and cultures. Our school is in an urban area within the Pacific Northwest. Many of my students live in apartments and don't have the opportunity to explore beyond our immediate surroundings. They love great books and their hearts are full of wonder as we embark on journeys through rich and diverse books.
My Project
I've taught several years, but this is the first time I've taught 5th grade. My students are passionate about reading and connecting to inspiring and exciting books that help them expand their worldviews!
Simply put, we need more good books.
Students spend at least 30 minutes every day in a reader's workshop in which they independently read and then respond and write about what they are reading. This will allow students more choice and options for books they are interested in. We have a small classroom library of donated and older books. However, we need more diverse and culturally relevant books that we can relate to. We also love graphic novels and would love to read more of those.
