This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever been in a classroom and the first thing you think of is, 'OK, but where do you teach?" Our library, without a proper meeting place, feels like that today! We need to have a common area to meet and for students to know when they are there, learning takes place!

Our students are AMAZING!

We have a very high free-reduced lunch population (hovering around 85%) and a very diverse group of students, with about 65% being Hispanic. We take a lot of pride in our students, and our staff works endlessly to try to overcome the poverty struggles that are so integrated into our students' daily lives. With our new principal, we are working diligently to set up our school as a community of hope for all students and families.

My Project

Our library has been going through an upgrade after not having a steady librarian for the past four years. One of the biggest areas we lack is a common place for instruction to occur. As a librarian who only gets to meet students once every other week, I really need to be able to spend less time managing, and all of it teaching. Having a carpet will really help cement an area as the focus point of where learning takes place.

It may seem simple, but having a durable rug will really help create a positive space for learning to take place.

Hopefully, it will also create a wave of change in the structure of the library that will help transform it into a better learning space.
