Mrs. Graham Jennings from Pittsburgh PA is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need rigorous novels; spelling and grammar curriculum which is not part of our 6th grade core; and daily writing prompts for writing practice.

Busy busy bees is how you could describe students in my classroom! I strive to find fun, new, interesting ways to engage my students in learning while holding them accountable to high levels of academic rigor. My ultimate goal is for ALL of my students to be proficient or advanced entering 7th grade.
My school demographics consist of 98% African American students and we are 100% free and reduced lunch.
My students come from a low-income, inner city experience; many of which live in housing projects and come from single family homes. This means that my students need a different approach to the 'traditional' methods of other schools. I consistently seek opportunities for my students to achieve at their highest potential so that they can reach each and every goal they set throughout their lives. In addition, our school participates in extensive racial equity training in order to eliminate our district's racial achievement disparity.
I have chosen multiple items to supplement and increase the rigor which is lacking from our current Core Curriculum, Items such as as Daily Language Practice, Daily Writing Practice, and Daily Vocabulary Practice will be used for differentiated instruction and small group support which will aid in student comprehension and Common Core Standard mastery. I also plan to use these items during lunch bunch and after-school tutoring. One of the problems with our current curriculum is that it lacks enough rigor to meet Common Core standards in multiple real-world situations. The items selected all feature content-rich texts that boost nonfiction comprehension while build grade-appropriate knowledge in reading, social studies, science, the arts, and more! When using these items, students will have exposure to high-interest, rigorous text, and use evidence from the text to answer skill-building questions.
My students lack real-world experiences and the background knowledge essential to comprehension due to a lack of funding and transportation.
Some never leave the complex in which they live, and many others are too busy taking care of younger siblings to enjoy experiences that so many other children take for granted. This lack of experience transfers to the classroom, making understanding nearly impossible for some. This project will give my students exposure to invaluable, hands-on knowledge!
