Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We come from an at risk Title 1 school and currently we are also a host school for some refugee kids.
For many of them, the food they eat here is all they get.
They get assistance from a food bank but I know that they have to share it with other family members. Even with their struggles at home, they come to school very happy and eager to learn, especially the refugee kids. Their most favorite part of the day is when we have story time. They just love it! I let them borrow books from my library all the time. Occasionally the books don't come back but that's okay. If they want it that bad, they can have it.
My Project
My students love reading books and they especially love storytime after lunch. However, I have a variety of different leveled readers and sometimes reading a book independently is difficult for some of them.
My listening center boombox recently bit the dust and most of my stories are on cassette and they are getting worn out.
I need a new boombox and some new books with a cd so that my students who struggle with reading can enjoy listening to some of the good quality literature available.
They will then be able to fill out a simple book report focusing on grade level standards such as sequencing events in the story.
